Authenticity Killer: how Chatgpt is killing creativity in writing and storytelling, and the fading image of human expression
Hey hey! This is Suli, I’m doing my Master’s in Artificial intelligence and adaptive systems. As a student who engages in discussions about AI and LLM’s and studying it for my masters degree makes it fair to say my opinion on this.
Universities around the world has strict standards and guidelines against plagiarism and usage of AI, and I do get it specifically within the writing and generation of text for reports. I firstly, didn’t think about it much but the more we study and get more difficult assignments the more it makes sense. Well I study amongst students from different parts of the world which is cool but I’ve been noticing that students don’t discuss or interact with their classmates or rant about things related to subjects or topics. It’s noticeable within seminars, ChatGpt smarts stay silent. Those who use ChatGPT regularly have killed the joy of studying honestly, and it led me to writing this article. The joy of struggling, banging head on the table, chatting with others about their progress — it’s all gone with the existence of our new friend at home or here on our phones.
I started a blog almost 10 years ago from my bedroom in December 2014. Back then I knew few things about the world, but I bet on learning things and writing about them, sharing my experiences, thoughts, rants, and feelings as stories or poetry. This joy of typing on the keyboard or with pen and paper, going on and on day and night, or the joy of exploring and reading, then taking notes with a pencil or sharing a quote with my mom or dad — it’s all gone?
Don’t get me wrong, I'm the guy who is studying AI and believing in the power of the machine learning industry and all the transformative tools that are changing the industries. But there has to be a limit, based on i-don’t-know the joy of things. It certainly isn’t affecting my experience that much but I feel sorry for those who have killed their creative muscle, nurturing it, and growing or challenging it is fading away with time. This increased dependency on AI-assistances will create a risk of fading human capability that brings richness, warmth or moving feelings from an article of a short story or even poetry. Original thoughts, and authentic expressions are also. Diminishing in this world that has become far dependent on the machine.
How to distinguish content on the internet?
With the increasing number of content published on the internet, how do distinguish the genuine writing from the one generated via AI models. You see, those models could be treated as avatars of one source that write by providing our prompts. What could be done is tagging this content with “AI generated” text at the top of article or “Assisted by xx model”. Medium and other platforms could introduce this feature to help readers finding creative, personal, and humane touch content.
Do you generate your articles/reports with ChatGpt? If not how do you use it? How do you keep up with your homework’s and assignments? Let me know below 😊
